Various - Rising From The Red Sand (Third Mind TMT 04/05) *****
Sounds 5/3/83, Dave Henderson.

A 2xC60 package which comes in blue plastic wallet and is testament to the upsurge of the 'New Underground' (a working title) movement. With superb playback quality over the two hour collection, it's a prime taster from 21 outfits who should, without doubt, be given a wider audience.

The set was compiled by the three brains behind the Tone Death magazine, and features better known acts such as; Section 25, Chris and Cosey (two tracks apiece) alongside the underated Nurse With Wound, Legendary Pink Dots, Nocturnal Emmissions and many more.

Covering a broad spectrum, this compilation shows the width of style and music which is being created by groups not just in this country but all over Europe. Of course, there are different merits for each track but there are obvious standout contributions from the likes of DDAA from France, Human Flesh from Belgium, the Welsh terrorkommand Lustmord and Coventry's Attrition.

For a movement that is so strong and versatile it seems odd that any wider exposure has not already been given. Look out for a forthcoming feature, but this tape will be an undoubted help and a positive starter for people who are interested in learning.

In these days of bland pop sensibility thank God for people like this who take risks. This is not easy listening but a powerful realisation of what TG, Skidoo and the Cabs built up and Can, Faust and the likes initiated years ago.

'Risig From The Red Sand' is availible from Gary Levermore, 20 Spire Avenue, Tankerton, Whitstable, Kent Ct5 3Ds. If you're getting bored with being'Too Shy', and who wouldn't be, send off your £4.50 today and live a little.
